The winery has 85 acres of vineyards , the perfect size for achieving flavor and a selection of varieties, which guarantees superior nonindustrial farming and a final result of unquestionable quality.
The vineyards are located at an altitude varying from 250 to 350 meters. The most representative red vineyards are the traditional Barbera and Bonarda from whose “marriage” the king of Piacenza red wines is born: Il Gutturnio. For the white wines the same philosophy pertains focusing on tradition, especially Ortrugo. A historic Verdea vineyard planted in 1950 has been maintained which is a dual purpose native variety of grape that our grandparents used to let dry out in wooden crates to then eat it after Christmas. This aspect of the grapes that can dry out naturally without spoiling (rotting) is an optimal base for making Passito (raisin) wine in production since 2010. The decision was also made to plant other varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah , even in our pedoclimatic conditions, also give interesting results. Farming the vineyards with care is the winery’s priority. All the cultivation procedures are focused on ensuring the perfect condition and ripening of the grapes. Harvesting is strictly done by hand and given the location of the plots of land that surround the farm , the grapes once harvested are transported to the cantina , stemmed and crushed in the shortest time possible which is indispensable for perfect vinification.
The wine making faithfully follows the Piacenza tradition that favors both red and white sparkling wines, on all the Ortugo and Gutturnio. At the same time attentive to the international taste producing excellent still wines with particular structure and elegance .
Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Nero, Merlot and Barbera refined in barrels, and a Gutturnio Reserve obtained from select grapes and aged for over a year in small oak barrels.
Almost all of the wines are sold in Italy, but La Toretta wines are also sold in other European countries such as Great Britian and Germany , as well as in China. Thanks to the union of anqiue passion and experience with vineyards together with modern technology in the cantina, the La Torretta winery has earned its place an important reference point in the winemaking business in Piacenza.
